XXII SemFem: Na granicy
22nd SemFem: On the Border
Go back! Słyszą od funkcjonariuszy Straży Granicznej. Go back!
– Moje filmy mówiły o pogardzie i nienawiści, o reżimach dzielących ludzi, politykach, którzy grają strachem i manipulują opinią publiczną, o skorumpowanych mediach. Szczepionka Holocaustu i gułagów przestała działać – powiedziała.

The last two months have seen one of the most serious humanitarian crises in Poland. On our eastern border people are dying or trembling with extreme exhaustion, cold, hunger and above all fear. Their only fault is that they were hoping for a better life. Go back! – they hear from Border Guard officers. Go back! – they hear from many residents of the border zone. Hostages held by a mad tyrant, pawns in a disgusting political game, where the stake is to win as much as possible regardless of humanitarian costs. There are people for whom the embryo in a woman’s body is more precious than the life of a several-year-old child, because that embryo is “our” human, and that child is “their” child.
During the Platinum Lion Award ceremony at this year’s Gdynia Film Festival, Agnieszka Holland seized to opportunity to share these important words in her own name and, as it later turned out, on behalf of many other artists:
–My films talked about contempt and hatred, about regimes that divide people into better and worse, about fearmongering politicians who manipulate public opinion, about corrupted media. I was aware that this time did not end, but only fell asleep and could come back at any moment if we are not careful enough. This is unfortunately happening. The vaccines of the Holocaust and the gulags are no longer working. It is difficult for me to enjoy our holiday today if I realise that something like this is happening very close to us, on our border. That people die there, whose main sin is that they are different. This is happening with our consent. No democratic state can allow innocent people to die on its borders. Die in silence like the protagonists of my films. I do not agree to cast Polish border guards as guards of the Berlin Wall. I do not accept that the local people play the role of informers. The state of emergency has been introduced so that there are no traces. I hope that humanity will still be the most important thing for us.
Just like this eminent film director, we feel that the time has come of a special test for all of us citizens, and for people in the cultural sector, who always have a special role to play in such situations. Not everyone hasAgnieszka Holland’s authority and reach to allow them to get their message across, but we know that there are many people among us whose art and activities address the fear of otherness stoked by the Polish government. We wish to meet you at the SemFem and discuss about what can be done to stop the tide of fear and hatred. We wish to learn about your projects and activities, examples of actions from other countries. We should be together now, as in other moments, to share experiences and the awareness that no human being is illegal.
On this occasion we encourage you to donate to victims of the current crisis on the Polish border:
