Autorstwo terminu “post-porn” przypisuje się fotografowi Winkowi van Kempen. W latach 80. grupa osób: Veronica Vera, Frank Moores, Candida Royale and Leigh Gates oraz pracująca w latach 80. w branży mainstreamowej pornografii Annie Sprinkle, zwróciły uwagę na konieczność stworzenia alternatywy uwzględniającej potrzeby kobiet oraz mniejszości seksualnych, a także odrzucenie uprzedmiotowienia aktorek_ów i zmianę estetyki gatunku na mniej przemocową. W latach 90. ruch proseksualnego feminizmu zyskał na znaczeniu, a o swoje prawa w tej sferze zaczęły upominać się również o soby ze społeczności trans, osoby zniepełnosprawnościami, czy starsze. Z czasem feministyczne porno stało się też pornem queerowym.
Jednocześnie post-porn stał się istotną strategią dla artystek_ów pracujących w obszarze filmu, sztuki wideo, fotografii, obiektu, performansu i wielu innych dziedzin. W latach 90. osoby zaangażowane w feministyczne porno zaczęły organizować własne nagrody i festiwale. Jednym z nich jest organizowany już po raz drugi, pomiędzy 13 a 18 czerwca 2023, Post Pxrn Film Festival Warsaw. Jego kuratorka, Aga Szreder i kurator Rafał Żwirek, tak deklarują na stronie festiwalu: “Wszyscy mamy ciała i niezbywalne prawo do tego, by się nimi cieszyć i używać ich tak, jak chcemy”.
Post-pornografia jest w swych założeniach antykapitalistyczna, anty patriarchalna i antyprzemocowa. Zwraca się przeciw instrumentalnemu traktowaniu osób pracujących w przynoszącym milionowe korzyści przemyśle pornograficznym. Odrzuca również powielanie odrealnionych kanonów seksualnej atrakcyjności, dąży do akceptacji różnorodności, wielości. Upomina się o prawa osób seksworkerskich, a także o prawa reprodukcyjne. Stanowi potężną dawkę wolności, a jednocześnie wskazuje jak o tą wolność, łamiąc systemowe ograniczenia, mamy się upominać. W tym rozumieniu jest ruchem prospołecznym, ruchem radykalnej czułości i troski, którą otacza również istoty nieludzkie i całą planetę, popierając tym samym aktywność osób ekoseksualnych. Istotą post-pornu jest coś więcej niż tylko wywołanie podniecenia seksualnego, ma dostarczać również podniety intelektualnej, a nawet doznań duchowych.

The term “post-porn” is said to have been coined by photographer Wink van Kempen. In 1980s, a group of people, including Veronica Vera, Frank Moores, Candida Royale and Leigh Gates, as well as Annie Sprinkle, who worked in mainstream porn industry during that decade, realised the need to create an alternative that would embrace the needs of women and sexual minorities, do away with treating actors like objects, and make the aesthetics of the genre less violent. In the 1990s, the pro-sex feminist movement gained significance, and their rights in that sphere began to be claimed by trans individuals, people with disabilities, and the elderly. With time, feminist porn also became queer porn.
At the same time, post-porn emerged as a vital strategy for artists active in photography, object, performance, and many other areas. In the 1990s, people involved in feminist porn began organising their own award ceremonies and festivals. One of such events is the Post Pxrn Festival Warsaw, whose second edition takes place between 13th and 18th June 2023. Its curators, Aga Szreder and Rafał Żwirek, state on the festival website: “We all have bodies and the inalienable right to enjoy and make use of them as we see fit.”
By principle, post-pornography is anti-capitalist, anti-patriarchal, and opposed to violence. It protests against the instrumental use of people working in the porn industry, which generates multi-million profits. It also rejects the replication of unrealistic sexual attractiveness canons and pursues the acceptance of diversity, multiplicity. It claims sex workers’ rights and reproductive rights. It administers a heavy dose of freedom, while showing at the same time how to fight for this freedom by overcoming systemic constraints. As such, it is a pro-social movement, a movement of radical tenderness and care, extended also to non-human entities
and the whole planet, thus supporting the activity of ecosexual individuals. The essence of post-porn is more than arousing sexual excitement. It is also intended to offer intellectual stimulation, and even spiritual sensations.
